I listened to “Returning to What’s
Natural” by Amelia Baxter-Stoltzfus. She realizes that even though she may die
her hair she knows that she can still go back to the color she was born with
easily. She talks about how her mom always used to say that the color you were
born with is the color you should have. However, she enjoyed mixing it up. She
could easily be bold and chose red or not so bold and go with just some highlights.
She enjoyed putting some spunk in her hair during the winter or not as adventurous
for summer. She loves that she can always go back to what is natural. Even though she may want to reinvent herself
with her new hair color, she won’t know what color works best until she tries
it. So for all she knows she may look awesome as a red head but if she never
tried it she will never know. She does
like permanent change, though not for her hair die. That is the one thing she
enjoys mixing up. She wrote her “this I
believe” speech when she was in high school, so her thoughts may have changed
once she went into college, but throughout high school that is what she liked
and how she wanted to mix things up was through her hair color.
I can’t
relate to her story as much as I could with my first “this I believe” speech.
For one I have never died my hair, and two I’m not one for change. I seem to
like what I’m used to and like to stay in my comfort zone. At times I wish I didn’t
like the “norm” as much, but I can’t help it, I like a routine and for things
to stay that way. I enjoy a few new things here and there but for the most part
I enjoy keeping with the same thing.
